 Save and Authorize Registration

ASWB offers two products that are available to candidates.

Free to download is the ASWB Examination Guidebook.

The ASWB Examination Guidebook is designed to give you the tools you need to apply for your license and register for and schedule your exam. It will also help you understand exactly what to expect on your exam day. It gives you the single most comprehensive look at the exam, from knowing how the exams are developed and what content will be tested to getting your exam on the calendar and understanding the testing environment. You can download this guidebook on our website at Association of Social Work Boards .

ASWB also offers an online practice test for registered candidates.

The practice test is $85 and includes 170 questions and 4 hours to answer all the questions.  You will have 30 days access to take the practice test one time, to review the questions, answers, and rationales. The practice test software emulates the test center software. There is only one version of the practice test.

Would you like to purchase the ASWB Online Practice test today?

(If a candidate is registering for an Associate Exam, make them aware that the Practice Test they will receive is the Bachelors. They are the same outline)

No approval

I am not showing that ASWB has an approval from your jurisdiction to take an ASWB examination. Please follow up with your board and have them submit your approval to ASWB so that you can register. if you give me your state/province I will be happy to provide you with the phone number to contact your board.

Address change concerns

Your mailing address will not be verified when you go to the testing center. ASWB will not be mailing you any information regarding your test or results.  After you have taken your exam and received your results, you are welcome to contact ASWB so we can update your address.

Name Issues

Contact your board and ask them to send a name correction to ASWB.  I would be happy to provide you with the phone number to contact your board. Once we have the name correction, you will be able to register. As a reminder: Please wait until the name correction has been sent to ASWB before you attempt to register online for the examination.

Middle name concerns

Your middle name is not verified at the testing center. They will only be verifying the names in the first name and last name fields.

Candidate is asking about an extension for their Approval.

Your Registration Expiration Date is directly tied to the approval to test expiration date you received from your state/province.  In this case, ASWB will need a new approval/authorization from your state/province to extend your Authorization to Test. If you have an appointment scheduled with Pearson VUE please remember to cancel it 24 hours before your appointment, so you do not forfeit your exam fee. You must contact your state/province for a new approval.  If you give me your state/province I would be happy to provide you with the phone number to contact your board.

Scoring

Score Verification Script

Reporting accurate scores is essential to ASWB’s mission. ASWB contracts with Pearson VUE to administer exams and score them electronically. Because of a series of quality checks that ensures the accuracy of electronic scoring, recounting correct and incorrect answers does not alter the result. Consequently, scoring verification for individual exams is unnecessary, and ASWB does not offer this service.

Has there ever been an error on scoring?

Not to my knowledge. The exam is scored with a high degree of accuracy and is verified multiple times before being put into production.

If a candidate is questioning the validity of the exam.

ASWB exams are a high-stakes test, and ensuring validity and reliability is critical. ASWB ensures validity through the way the exam is constructed, from the practice analysis through the analysis of pretest questions. Reliability is established through statistical monitoring of individual test question performance, as well as psychometric techniques used to generate the passing scores and equate different forms.

If a candidate is asking about reviewing their exam

ASWB does not allow candidates to conduct a review of their examination because of concerns about exam security. Exam questions must be protected from being used for purposes other than testing knowledge. For example, examination review could create a security breach and provide the opportunity for the questions to be memorized and sold to test prep companies, something that has actually happened in other high stakes testing programs.

Further, reviewing the questions you missed is unlikely to help you do better if you decide to retest. When you retest, you are given a different version of the examination. While the content being tested by each of the exam’s versions remains the same, the questions are different.

If a candidate is questioning the exam development

You may email examdev@aswb.org and that team will respond to your concerns.

Multiple Choice Question Change

A combination of three- and four-option multiple-choice questions will offer a better test-taking experience by reducing time pressure and ensuring a focus on social work knowledge. The exam and practice exam will gradually include more three-option questions going forward, with the goal of completing the transition by 2025.

Why do I have to wait 90 days between exams?

The waiting period exists for exam security reasons. It also benefits you because it sets aside time to prepare for your next attempt.

Why is the exam so expensive?

To respond to your concerns about the cost of the examination, the social work licensing examination fee is established primarily to support the ASWB social work licensing examination program. ASWB’s fees are separate from any fees payable to your jurisdiction’s licensing board which could vary from state to state.
