5th Theory Assessment response:

While we are glad that the profile questionnaire has seemed to be valuable to you as a way to help you make a study plan for retaking the exam, we want to make sure you understand that its purpose is not diagnostic in any way. The TestPrep Profile Report is a study tool and cannot be used as supporting documentation to request nonstandard testing arrangements.

Adding Arrangements to a Registration:

I received your email that you have cancelled your appointment.  The process of adding your testing arrangements to your registration has been initiated.  Once the process is complete you will receive a new Authorization to Test email.  Please be watching for it.

Do NOT make a testing appointment until you receive a new Authorization to Test email within the next two business days.

If you do not see the email, please check your spam folder.  Follow the instructions in that email to make your next testing appointment.

  • Because you have been approved for testing arrangements, please check to see that the testing arrangements listed on the new Authorization to test email match the testing arrangements that you have been approved for.  If they do not match, contact ASWB by responding to this email as soon as possible.

Appeal Language:

Although ASWB does not offer a procedure for filing an appeal or challenging a resolution, you may contact the Director of Examination Administration. If you wish to do that, email a personal statement describing your concern and any pertinent documentation to:  examadmin@aswb.org.  The director will review your concern and issue a final decision via email.

Already registered with Testing Arrangements:

Because you registered and paid for the examination prior to the expiration date of your testing arrangements, they have become part of your registration.  As long as you select a testing date that is prior to the date of your registration expiration date, you will be able to use your testing arrangements for the duration of your registration.

Applying for extension with expired NSTA’s:

For information regarding extending your registration to test, please complete the request for at this link: Authorization to Test expiration date extension - Association of Social Work Boards (aswb.org).  If you apply for a registration extension and are not approved, you will need to reapply for testing arrangements if you intend to use nonstandard testing arrangements during your next examination.  Please send an email to specialarrangements@aswb.org regarding any questions regarding nonstandard testing arrangements.

ASL Interpreter EM:

Thank you for reaching out regarding the arrangement of a Sign Language Interpreter. Please see the options below for your request and let us know which option would work best for you.

  1. Sign Language Interpreter- Only Before and After the examination: A Sign Language Interpreter will be present to only facilitate communication with test center staff. The interpreter is not allowed in the testing room.

  2. Sign Language Interpreter- Full exam: A Sign Language Interpreter will be present to facilitate communication with test center staff and to sign test questions. The interpreter may not answer or explain any content-related questions. Terms of art or other social work-specific words that cannot be interpreted into ASL will be communicated to the candidate through finger spelling.

Please do not register to take the examination until you have been informed via email whether your request has been approved. If you make a testing appointment prior to obtaining nonstandard testing arrangements, you will be required to cancel your testing appointment because testing arrangements cannot be added to an existing testing appointment.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Audio Options EM:

We have reviewed your request and have some additional questions regarding the requested “audio” examination. Please see the options below and let us know which you believe would work best for you.

  1. Recorded examination:

    1. Administered using a DVD player—current model is a DBPOWER 9.5 inch player. Model NO. SY-02.

    2. DVD Player remote buttons are the standard/smaller buttons. Remote buttons are not able to be enlarged.

    3. Test takers can use the DVD Player remote to replay questions as needed.

    4. Requires a Paper and Pencil version of the examination. Test scores are mailed to the test taker within 10 business days of the examination. Two highlighters also come with the test packet.

  2. Reader:

    1. Test taker may request a phone interview with the potential reader before their scheduled examination.

    2. This arrangement does not require a paper and pencil version of the examination and can be administered on the computer.

    3. The examination has the capability to go up to 200% in increments of 25%.  I have attached a link for helpful information:  https://www.aswb.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ASWB-testing-software-sample-screens.pdf.

    4. The computer examination software also has highlighting and strikethrough capabilities.

Please let us know which you believe would work best for you. If you would like to schedule a call to discuss, please send me your availability and a good contact number to reach you by.

Please review and let me know your thoughts.

Braille Examination:

Your practitioner requested a Braille form of the examination. See the different arrangements listed below and let us know which option would work best for you.

  1. Braille examination

a.       Braille paper exam in 12-point font

b.       Test takers may use a Braille writer (non-electronic) to take notes in Braille, but all paper must be collected by the Test Administrator before the candidate exits the test room. The test taker may bring their own paper as it may be heavier weight. The Test Administrator will need to check the paper to make sure no Braille notations have been made. The Test Administrator must also collect the paper at the end of the exam. All items are subject for visual inspection by test center staff at the test center. We will need a picture of these items to provide to Pearson VUE for their review before we can approve this testing arrangement.

c.       Test takers should expect a minimum of 8 weeks to schedule Braille exams. We will need to explore this with Pearson VUE to give you an exact timeframe.

d.       Test takers will receive test results within 10 business days of their examination in the mail.

Denial for Paper and Pencil Exam:

  • Paper and Pencil examinations are given in extenuating circumstances and would require your practitioner to submit a rationale.   A rationale is an explanation of why each recommended accommodation is necessary with references to test results or clinical observations. The signed rationale must be written on your practitioner’s letterhead, and it can be emailed to specialarrangements@aswb.org or faxed to 540 829 0142.

  • For the reasons described below your request cannot be granted as submitted for a paper and pencil examination:

·         Per our policy, “All ASWB examinations will be provided in an electronic testing format at centers acceptable to the Association in regard to location, staffing, and security.”

·         Nonstandard Testing Arrangements are not provided for test taking anxiety in and of itself.  ASWB’s policy, states, “In no circumstances shall a diagnosis of unspecified anxiety disorder (as listed in the current edition of the DSM or ICD) related to examination administrations be accepted as a valid reason for testing accommodations.”

o    Under the ADA, an individual with a disability is a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity (such as seeing, hearing, learning, reading, concentrating, or thinking) or a major bodily function (such as the neurological, endocrine, or digestive system).

Diabetes EM:

We received your request for nonstandard testing arrangements, and I have a few questions about the equipment that you use to monitor your blood sugar.

  1. Do you use an insulin pump and/or a continuous glucose monitor?

  • Does your insulin pump or continuous glucose monitors have remote devices?  If so, please provide me with the make and model of the remotes.

    • Do you use a cell phone or smart watch to monitor your insulin pump or continuous glucose monitor?

      • If a cell phone is required to monitor your blood sugar, additional steps will need to be taken with Pearson VUE for approval to ensure security measures, including a closed test center (only tester at the test center) as cell phones and/or smart watches are not permitted in the test center.

      • Please provide the name of the app you use on your cell phone to monitor your insulin pump or continuous glucose monitor.

    • Can your insulin pump or glucose monitor be put on silent/vibrate mode?

2. Do you rely on the finger prick method to monitor your blood sugar?  If so, are you able to use this method in the lobby of the testing center?

3. How often do you check your blood sugar?

Please respond to the questions above so that we can consider your request.

Documents lost in the mail:

As of this afternoon, we have not received your request for nonstandard testing arrangements in the mail. Can you confirm when you mailed it and that you mailed it to 17126 Mountain Run Vista Ct., Culpeper VA 22701?

If sent to wrong address:

Thank you for your quick response. That address is our former location. I would contact the postal service that you sent your request through as they will have further information to provide to you about the status of the letter.

If you still have records of the request that you mailed before, you can mail the request to the address listed below in the signature line.

DocuSign issues:

  • If the candidate is having a hard time with the email, they received from DocuSign. They must click on the yellow button that says, “REVIEW DOCUMENT”.

You will need to click on the yellow button that says, “REVIEW DOCUMENT”. Once you click on that button, it will direct you to the request form. You will need to click on the button to agree to DocuSign’s Electronic Record and Signature Disclosure, and then hit continue. From there, you will need to complete the form and hit submit.

  • If they are still having issues, it may be an issue with their phone:

If you are using your phone, there could be a formatting issue depending on the phone and browser you may be using.

Please try to use a laptop or desktop computer to open and complete the document. If that does not work, please let me know.

  • If they are still not able to open the document after attempts to troubleshoot.

If that does not work, and you are comfortable doing so, you can print the attached PDF, fill out by hand and scan back to me.

For security purposes, DO NOT COMPLETE THE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.

Sorry for any trouble you may be having. Thanks for reporting it.

DRC Offices EM:

Thank you for inquiring about the process for University’s to submit Part II of the Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements on behalf of individuals with learning disabilities.

Test-takers who are diagnosed with a learning disability, may ask the disability resource center (DRC) staff at the college/university that they attended to fill out part II, the Practitioner’s Statement, of the application.  DRC staff may cross out the word “practitioner” on the form if this facilitates the process.  In addition to filling out the application, the DRC staff must also write a letter on their letterhead, signed, that details the accommodations the test-taker received while attending their facility and the duration of those accommodations.  The test-taker must also include a copy of the most current psychoeducational, psychological, or neuropsychological evaluation that diagnosed or confirmed their learning disability.

Part I (the part that the test-taker completes) and Part II of the ASWB Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements must be submitted with original ink signatures by mail.  Copies, scans or faxes of signatures will not be accepted.

If the DRC office at your college or university is unwilling to fill out Part II of the application, then Part II must be completed by an approved professional service provider who has expertise in the area of the test-taker’s disability and who has evaluated the test-taker and is familiar with the test-taker’s condition.

ESL Shipping Dictionary EM:

You were approved for a _______/English word to word dictionary to use for your ASWB examination and we need to ship the dictionary to you so that you can bring it to your examination.

Please provide a shipping address so we can mail the dictionary to you.

The dictionary will be shipped within 14 days from the date I am informed of the shipping address. If you do not receive the dictionary at least 5 business days prior to your examination, please send an email to specialarrangements@aswb.org.

Your dictionary will arrive via USPS in a plastic envelope containing a sealed, clear internal plastic bag that must remain sealed until opened by Pearson VUE staff at the test center. If the internal plastic bag containing the dictionary is torn or opened, you cannot use it to test, and the dictionary must be returned to ASWB. Another dictionary will be shipped to you at your expense ($40.00 US).

If you mark in or damage the dictionary beyond what would be expected for normal use, you may be charged a $40 restocking fee.

ESL EM response for DocuSign:

For ESL, we are using DocuSign and would email a request to you that you would electronically sign. Would you like me to send you the request form to this email address?

Some jurisdictions allow special arrangements for test-takers whose first language is not English. Arrangements typically include extra time and provision of English and/or a bilingual word to word dictionary.  Tests are not available in alternate languages. You must be approved for ESL arrangements by ASWB before you register to take an examination.

Please note the following state specific information:

  • Illinois, Michigan, and New York do not permit ESL arrangements or accept score transfers for test-takers that tested with ESL arrangements in another jurisdiction.

  • California only permits additional time.

Requests will be sent from DocuSign on Tuesday’s and Friday’s each week. All requests are processed in the order in which they are received, and it can typically take three (3) weeks from the date of receipt to process the request.  Once the request is processed, you will receive an email with an attached determination letter.  It is your responsibility to contact ASWB if you have not received any communications after 3 weeks.

Please do not register to take the examination until you have been informed via email whether your ESL arrangements have been approved.  If you make a testing appointment prior to obtaining arrangements, you will be required to cancel your testing appointment because arrangements cannot be added to an existing testing appointment.

CA test takers will need to go to the Exam page for the LCSW exam and Clinical Exam on the BBS website at www.bbs@dca.ca.gov for further information on applying for ESL.

ESL Accommodation Request (ca.gov)

ASWB is unable to consider your request due to incomplete approval.  Please contact the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (CA BBS) at BBS.Exams@dca.ca.gov to obtain approval for ESL arrangements.  Once you have obtained approval, the CA BBS will contact ASWB, and we will process your request.

Evaluation Requirements:

Please submit a copy of the most current psychoeducational, psychological, or neuropsychological evaluation that diagnosed or confirmed your learning disability. When reviewing we ensure the following:

·         Test-taker was tested using adult norms.

·         Evaluation was completed by a practitioner who evaluated the test-taker and has expertise in the area of the disability and qualifications to make the test-taker’s specific diagnosis(es).

·         The evaluation must be on professional letterhead and signed by the evaluator.

·         The evaluation must include a diagnosis and recommendations for testing arrangements in a standardized testing environment.

When we receive an evaluation, we understand that there may be information that is private and does not pertain to a learning disability diagnosis.  Please be assured that you may redact information that is not pertinent for us to review.

Expiring ADA but Candidate can register before it expires:

Your current request for nonstandard testing arrangements expires on ___. If you register for an ASWB exam before ___, then these arrangements will attach to your registration. You will be able to use the arrangements for the duration of your registration.

If you register for an exam after ___, then you will need to complete an updated request for nonstandard testing arrangements.

Lactating Individual:

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding nonstandard testing arrangements for lactating individuals.

We are using DocuSign and would email a request to you that you would electronically sign. Requests are sent from DocuSign on Tuesday’s and Friday’s each week. Would you like me to send you the request form to this email address?

Lactating individuals who need to pump or express milk may be approved for these nonstandard testing arrangements:

· Sixty minutes of extra time for pumping or expressing

· Use of a designated space for pumping or expressing

· Permission to keep water in a transparent, spill proof, sports-type bottle with a spout at the testing desk

Because of the importance of providing a secure testing environment for its high-stakes licensing exams, ASWB contracts with PSI to test its candidates. PSI administers a wide variety of exams for various purposes. Some of the rules that those taking the social work licensing exams must follow may not match the rules for those taking other exams.

For individuals who are approved to pump or express milk, PSI test centers in the United States and Canada will provide a private space. The space varies at each test center, but all have a chair, table, electrical outlet, and door. The private space is available to individuals approved for this nonstandard arrangement and may be used only for pumping or expressing milk. PSI will disable camera views and block viewing windows as needed in the designated private space.

If you intend to use nonstandard testing arrangements:

· Wait to register to take the examination until after you have received an email about whether your nonstandard testing arrangements are approved.

· If you schedule a testing appointment before receiving approval for nonstandard testing arrangements, you will have to cancel your testing appointment.

· Nonstandard testing arrangements cannot be added to an existing testing appointment because another test-taker will be using the testing station after your appointment.

· If you need nonstandard testing arrangements for a disability, health condition, or other need or if English is not your first language, you must request these arrangements on a separate request form.

If after being approved for nonstandard testing arrangements, you no longer need them, contact us at specialarrangements@aswb.org.

It typically takes three weeks to process a complete request. If your request is incomplete, we will email you. Once your request is processed, we will email your determination letter. It is your responsibility to contact ASWB if you have not received any communication within three weeks. NOTICE: Due to high volume, applicants may expect a longer than typical processing time.

Nonstandard testing arrangements are valid for one year from the date when the request is signed by the applicant.

Learning Disability with Eval on hand:

If you would like the same nonstandard testing arrangements that you were previously approved for, then we will just need an updated Part I from you. We can email a Part I request form via DocuSign. If so, would you like us to send it to this email address?

If you are requesting different nonstandard testing arrangements you were not previously approved for, you and your practitioner will need to complete an updated request for nonstandard testing arrangements. You will also need to submit an updated personal statement and the copy of any updated evaluations.

If you have further questions and would like to schedule a call, please respond to this email with available times and dates and a phone number where you can be reached.

NSTA’s cannot be added to existing appointment:

Nonstandard testing arrangements cannot be added to an existing testing appointment because the necessary resources, including space and time, must be secured at the test center. If you intend to apply for testing arrangements and are approved, you must cancel your examination appointment at least 24 hours prior to your testing appointment.

Paper and Pencil reverification request email to candidate:

ASWB reached out to Pearson VUE to reverify your most recent examination. Pearson VUE staff verified the answers you selected on your test booklet were the answers recorded into the computer. There were no errors and you received the correct score.

Pearson VUE:

1. Call Volumes:

Please note that call volumes for Pearson VUE are high and the typical wait times can be up to an hour. Please call back when you know you will have a good connection. The Pearson Vue Call Centers are open 8am-7pm EST.

Pearson VUE lists low cost clinics at this site that can evaluate you for certain disabilities: https://home.pearsonvue.com/test-taker/Test-accommodations/Low-cost-clinics.aspx

3. Appointment Scheduling considerations for candidates:

Pearson VUE offers appointments as they are available and must fill earlier timeslots first before other timeslots can be offered. You have the option to continue to contact Pearson VUE and ask for more testing dates in the hopes that they offer you a testing appointment that is not at ___ AM.  You do not have to accept a testing time that doesn’t suit you.

Appointments are offered based on availability and we encourage candidates to schedule early. You may need to travel and be flexible with dates, times, and locations in order to schedule an appointment within your desired timeframe.

Personal Statement:

We have received and reviewed your request for nonstandard testing arrangements. On the Candidate Instructions page of the Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements the following documentation is listed as “required supporting documentation.”

Please fill out the form here: https://www.aswb.org/exam-candidates/testing-accommodations/

Part II must be completed by an approved professional service provider who has expertise in your pregnancy, and who has evaluated you, and is familiar with your condition.

Please do not register to take the examination until you have been informed via email whether your nonstandard testing arrangements have been approved.  If you make a testing appointment prior to obtaining nonstandard testing arrangements, you will be required to cancel your testing appointment because nonstandard testing arrangements cannot be added to an existing testing appointment.

Parts I and II of the Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements must be submitted with original ink signatures by mail.  Copies or faxed signatures will not be accepted.

It typically takes 2 weeks to process a complete request.  If your request is not complete you will be notified via email.  Once your application is processed you will receive a determination letter via email.  It is your responsibility to contact ASWB if you have not received any communications after 2 weeks.

·         It is important for you and your evaluator to remember that the purpose of nonstandard testing arrangements is to provide access to the test, not to achieve any particular outcome such as passing the test, earning a certain score, or “doing your best.”

We are no longer using this harsh language in the sub-bullet. Keeping it in our template just in case it is needed for the future.

Service Animal breaks:

Candidates are allowed to take the service animal outside to relieve itself. This is an exception to the Candidate Rules Agreement and these breaks if needed should remain brief. Please inform test center personnel where you are going when you take the dog outside. For security reasons, candidates are otherwise not permitted to leave the test center building.

Testing Anxiety:

Nonstandard Testing Arrangements are not provided for test taking anxiety in and of itself. ASWB’s policy, states, “In no circumstances shall a diagnosis of unspecified anxiety disorder (as listed in the current edition of the DSM or ICD) related to examination administrations be accepted as a valid reason for testing accommodations.”

·         If your diagnosis is not limited to test taking, please complete and submit a new Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements with documentation of major life activities that are affected by your disability/health condition and accommodations previously granted in employment or educational settings.

NSTA’s cannot be added/allowances that do not require approval:

Nonstandard testing arrangements cannot be added to an existing testing appointment because the necessary resources, including space and time, must be secured at the test center. If you intend to apply for testing arrangements and are approved, you must cancel your examination appointment at least 24 hours prior to your testing appointment.

If you decide not to pursue testing arrangements, the following allowances do not require prior approval for testing arrangements.

  • After visual inspection, you may bring unwrapped glucose tablets and/or cough drops into the testing space.

  • Short breaks may be taken, however the clock continues to run.

  • Effective January 1, 2023, all test takers can access their locker for food and drink without prior approval.

To apply for nonstandard testing arrangements, you and your practitioner will complete the Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements and request arrangements that are reasonable per your diagnosis(es). ASWB does not provide a listing of available nonstandard testing arrangements.

Please read the information and fill out the Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements at the following link: Requesting nonstandard testing arrangements for a disability or other health condition - Association of Social Work Boards (aswb.org)

Third Party Inquiries

Good afternoon,

ASWB is unable to provide specific information to any third parties, but we can provide general information. Test takers must complete Parts I and II of the Request for Nonstandard testing arrangements form with their practitioner. The test taker must also provide supporting documentation such as a personal statement and if applicable, a copy of an evaluation that confirms their learning disability. All information is listed on the instruction pages of the request form at the following link: Nonstandard testing arrangements - Association of Social Work Boards (aswb.org)

Exam test takers with specific questions related to nonstandard testing arrangements should email specialarrangements@aswb.org.

Visual Impairment:

I have received your Request for Nonstandard Testing Arrangements.  Your application requests enlarged print.

The examination has the capability to go up to 200% in increments of 25%.  I have attached a link for helpful information:  https://www.aswb.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ASWB-testing-software-sample-screens.pdf.   Would this option allow you to access the examination?

The ASWB exams can also utilize JAWS or ZoomText.  Utilizing either one of these options requires that you have working knowledge of either program.

  • ZoomText would be for Screen Magnification and Color Contrast only.  Pearson VUE currently uses ZoomText 2019, and you can learn more about ZoomText at the following link: Downloads: ZoomText Previous Versions (freedomscientific.com).

  • JAWS is a screen reader. This option requires that you have proficient working knowledge of either program.

    • Note: There is no internet access at the testing centers and keyboard commands that access or navigate the internet will not work.  Standard navigational keyboard commands to move through text content and adjust settings will work.

Please review and let me know your thoughts.
