90-day waiver

Candidates must wait 90-days between exam retakes – even if taking a different level or taking for a different state. However, there are exceptions to the policy.

Applying

  • No candidate may take the examination more frequently than every 90 days.

    • Unless failed the exam within 10 questions & jurisdiction allows for waivers.

    • 90 days wait begins the day after candidate missed the exam. Candidates can schedule for the 91st day and after once re-registers.

    • Spec 1 can advised to candidate if they do not qualify based on number of incorrect answers and/or jurisdiction. If candidate insists, direct to online form.

  • Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. when there has been serious, documented malfunction with administration of the examination.

  • When a candidate has been approved for 2 different exam levels, and already has passed one exam and would like to take the other exam immediately, candidate will still need to apply for waiver.

    • Even if for 2 separate states

      • This excludes switching between the Associate and bachelor's examinations, which share the same content.

  • Exceptions will be handled by Exam Administration Project Coordinators

  • Most jurisdictions allow- CA, ND, NV & SC do not accept waivers.

  • Candidate should not re-register until waiver is approved.

  • A maximum of two (2) waivers may be permitted per examination category every 12 months.

Excused Absence

If a candidate was unable to cancel their appointment to test prior to the 24-hour time frame, candidate can apply for an excused absence.

Applying

  • All requests must be submitted online - https://www.aswb.org/exam/exam-appointments/excused-absences/.

    • Documentation must be submitted with the online form. If not received, will be excused absence $150 fee without exception.

  • Requests must be submitted online within 30 days after the missed examination appointment.

    • Spec 1 can tell candidates they do not qualify if over 30 days, if candidate insists, direct them to the form.

  • Candidate will be notified of approval / denial and next steps once review completed.

  • Valid for one year

  • If candidate registers prior to being approved for an excused absence, there is no further recourse. We will not refund the difference.

Fee’s

Depending on circumstances can be no charge or $150 discounted fee.

  • Death of a family member

  • Illness (self or family member)

  • Car accident

  • Weather-related delay

  • Medical emergency (self or family member)

  • Military deployment

 

  • Late arrival to the test center

  • Incorrect rescheduling

  • Insufficient ID on exam day

  • Missed appointment.

  • Unpreparedness to test

  • Documentation not provided.

 

Documentation Required:

  • Hospital discharge paperwork that includes candidate’s name (or family member’s name) and date(s) covered

  • Police report that includes candidate’s name and date(s) covered

  • Practitioner’s note on clinic letterhead that includes candidate’s name (or family member’s name) and date(s) covered.

  • Death certificate or obituary

  • News reports about closures or weather emergencies

  • Employer letter on letterhead that includes candidate’s name and date(s) covered.

 

No documentation required.

Extension

If a candidate is unable to take the exam within their one-year authorization to test they can apply for an extension.

Applying

  • It is the candidate’s responsibility to leave ample time to attempt to test if the request is denied.

    • Candidates should be advised if applying to cancel appointment if coming up soon.

      • Cancelations must be done within regulations.

  • Extensions are for 3 months.

  • Generally there is no more than 1 extension per candidate. If candidate insists there is extenuating circumstances to require a 2nd extension, direct to the online form for review.

  • Must be submitted within 30 days of registration expiration date.

  • Candidate’s jurisdiction approval must still be good, if not candidate will need to get a new approval from their board before ASWB can process an extension.

  • Candidate will be notified if approved or not approved.

    • If approved the candidate will get new authorization to test email with new expiration date.

Incidents

The purpose of an incident is to resolve any testing difficulties the candidate may have had during the exam administration or at the testing facility.

Reporting:

All candidates must report incidents to ASWB within 48 hours of occurrence, even if they already reported to Pearson VUE. Candidates must fill form on site: Examination incident report - Association of Social Work Boards (aswb.org). If candidates do not report incident, there is limited to no recourse available.

Examples of incidents-

  • Anything that occurs at the center.

    • i/e Candidate wig was removed completely to check, candidate complaining about noise at center.

If a candidate is calling to check on the status of an active incident, direct the candidate to write an email to ExamPC@aswb.org.

If candidate insists on speaking to someone immediately, transfer call to 3350.

Candidates at the Testing Center with Emergency/Urgent Situation

  • I/e candidate palm scan doesn’t match, getting turned away from center for reason candidate not at fault for.

    • Get Felicia ASAP

      • If in a meeting, get her or call or ping her if not in building. Becky will also need to be notified and may already be in touch with Felicia.

      • If Felicia is not here/unavailable Subrena is the back up.

 

Paper & Pencil

Paper & pencil exams are no longer approved without accommodations.
