Score Transfer Process

Social workers are looking to gain more mobility. ASWB is a large advocate for getting all states to be more similar, so mobility is able to be obtained eventually.

  • Any time a candidate wants to be licensed in another state there are multiple steps:

  • Candidate would need to apply to the state they want to be licensed in, they can be licensed in as many states as they wish to be, the candidate would however be responsible for keeping up with the requirements for each state to continue licensure.

  • ASWB rep can look to verify if that new state they would like to be licensed in accepts the exam level candidate took. Every state and Canadian Providence accept the Clinical exam, however not all states accept the Associates, Bachelors, master's & Adv Generalist.

    • If the state does not accept this, the candidate would likely need to take the exam for that state or possibly choose a different licensure level if they have taken a lower exam that the new state will accept.

  • Once candidate has applied to the board, they will need to go to ASWB website and submit a score transfer request.

    • Score transfers are completed once a week by IT to each of the state boards through encrypted emails for security.

    • Advise to each candidate it can take up to 7-10 days for the state to receive this.

  • If board is claiming never received after 30 days, we can submit as needed without additional payment.

  • If candidate score was prior to 1998, representative will need to verify score in ASI.

  • ASWB can only transfer passing scores.

    • There are occasions when the board will still ask for a copy of the non-passing score transfer or give an approval for ASWB to send a score the board generally doesn't accept.

      • This request is processed with Specialist II emailing board.
